Russell is a cooperative preschool, and parents play a vital role in the daily functioning and overall running of the school. Each day, one family helper assists the teachers by preparing and serving the morning snack, setting up lunch, and getting the cots ready for afternoon rest. Family helping is a commitment of at least six days per year for each family. In addition, each family serves on one of several committees, attends an annual work day and the annual Russell Preschool Association meeting.

The Russell School Board typically includes current parents, alumni parents, community members and the school Director.

Through these activities, and especially by helping at school, families have a chance to be involved in their child's first school experience, and to get to know all the children and teachers well. Over the years, families have confirmed that this involvement with their children's school experience generates a valuable feeling of community and commitment for families, teachers, and children alike. Young children come to feel at home with their classmates' families and especially look forward to their days as the "child of the family helper." Parents are always welcome to visit their child's class, and we encourage families and teachers to keep in close touch with each other to ensure continuity between home and school.
